Top Tips for Interview Preparation

1. Research the company
Ÿ
You need to know about your future employer
Ÿ
It shows initiative

2. Work out the likely format and approach of the Interviewer
Ÿ
Group / 1:1
Ÿ
Competence based questions, themes, presentation required?

3. Identify the main areas where questions will be asked   - based on  job advertisement
Ÿ
Usually through the advert or through correspondence, you can determine the main areas/ skills or experience they are looking for
Ÿ
List down each of these areas and find an example where you have shown you have this experience/ trait or skill/competence – we need a story here

4. Prepare scenarios/stories from your experience above to address each question you may be asked
Ÿ
Write them down
Ÿ
Ensure they are appropriate and to the point – absolutely no waffling!!

5. Rehearse the scenarios above – again and again

6. Practice your answers to the possible questions
Sounds weird I know – but it works

7. If a question appears to go badly in an Interview – don’t panic.
Ÿ
It’s usually not as bad as it seems.
Ÿ
Put 100% effort into the rest of the interview, do not let this distract you

8. Dress to suit the job you are applying for
Ÿ
Top job -  top suit

9. Golden Rule - Never criticise or speak negatively about anyone or any previous company you have worked with
Ÿ
It will never sound good
Ÿ
Even it’s true – still don’t say it

10. Smile
Ÿ
Believe it or not, a happy smiling face is much more attractive to an employer than one with a look of terror.
